Customer Spotlight: A Purpose-Built Revolver for The Salmonfly Project

At Axis Vehicle Outfitters, we believe a good van build should reflect the people and purpose behind it. That’s why we were excited to partner with The Salmonfly Project, an organization working to conserve aquatic insects and the freshwater ecosystems they call home. Their mission? To preserve river health for future generations through research, monitoring, education, and restoration — the kind of work that requires flexibility, mobility, and resilience. Just like a good van.

When the team reached out to us, they were in the early stages of planning a mobile lifestyle that would support both work and family life. Their goal was clear: a durable, no-fuss build that could handle months on the road, store scientific equipment, and stay comfortable through three seasons of travel — from sunny riverbanks in Montana to chilly mornings in the Colorado high country.

Custom Ford Transit Trail Van for Fieldwork and Travel

For this project, we started with a 2023 AWD Ford Transit Trail, outfitted with our trusted Axis Revolver layout — a proven base for those needing reliability and adaptability. This build was designed specifically to support seasonal living and fieldwork in rugged, remote environments.

Knowing the family would be living in the van for up to six months at a time, we focused on smart gear storage, efficient layouts, and materials that could withstand heavy use in unpredictable conditions.

Durable, Low-Maintenance Van Build Materials

For a scientific research team, durability is non-negotiable. The Salmonfly Project chose high-performance finishes that strike a balance between strength, comfort, and cost:

• Marathon Heather Grey commercial fabric for long-term durability and comfort

• Lonseal Smokey Black flooring for easy clean-up and tough wear

• Wilsonart Blackbird laminate cabinetry for modern looks and serious performance

These materials are ideal for off-grid travel, wet or muddy conditions, and long-term living in a custom camper van.

Supporting Environmental Conservation with Mobile Research

The Salmonfly Project conducts hands-on fieldwork throughout the western U.S., working in rivers across Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Their van isn’t just for travel — it’s a mobile research station, basecamp, and home for a family of three.

By giving them the ability to live and work out of a van, we’re helping reduce their footprint while increasing their field presence — something that aligns perfectly with our own ethos: build smart, travel often, stay out longer.

A Minimalist Van Life Setup Built for Purpose

We worked closely with the team to keep the build focused and within budget. With the Revolver layout as the foundation, we avoided unnecessary complexity, focusing only on the accessories and systems they truly needed.

The result? A streamlined camper van layout that supports gear storage, climate flexibility, and full-time or seasonal van life — all without sacrificing comfort or durability.
